The place it began.
Rory grew up in Holywood, County Down. His father, Gerry, introduced him to golf; coach Michael Bannon helped develop his game. At nine, he won the under-10 world championship at Doral in Florida.

From promise to profession.
In 2007, McIlroy earned The Open’s Silver Medal as leading amateur at Carnoustie, played in the Walker Cup and turned professional. His first European Tour win came in Dubai in 2009; a first PGA Tour victory followed at Quail Hollow in 2010.
The early promise became a career competing on both sides of the Atlantic. He also made his Ryder Cup debut for Europe in 2010.
